A courageous railway staff member who intervened to save travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening injuries, authorities stated on Sunday.
Surveillance video allegedly depicts the employee trying to stop the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Bystanders described a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for interrogation. Police declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
The event on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five individuals have since been discharged from hospital.
A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous member of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a high-ranking police official.
Rail associations were quick to commend employees and demand increased action. One labor official stated he would be “requesting immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest possible support, tools and robust protocols in place”.
A different union representative encouraged the rail company and authorities “to act swiftly to review security, to help the affected workers, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
The operator who stopped the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been praised by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“The driver did not stop the service in the middle of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” explained a association official.
Authorities said they received the first emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer recounted at first wondering if the situation was a holiday joke, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was serious.
Authorities have stated there is no evidence to indicate the incident was a terrorist attack and have asked the community to come forward with any additional information.
Train operations on the affected route are expected to have disruption until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their travel where possible.
