Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.
The former director's legal representative filed the plea representing him in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
The defense lawyer stated he would attempt to have the proceedings thrown out for various reasons including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
James Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to take action against him.
At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel the legal representative advised the judge they aimed to present multiple legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a court case, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to assume control of the proceedings.
James Comey's legal matter was first managed by the original attorney, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his investigation into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to file indictments.
The former director appeared in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and offspring his daughter, a US lawyer who the previous administration terminated.
After listening to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the charges.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he told the judge.
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, he was leading an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
While in office, James Comey caused a backlash from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.
The federal government claim the former director lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the legislative body by saying he had not authorized a person at the FBI to release to media organizations information about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, block and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Through a recording James Comey published to his Instagram after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged Trump of acting like a "dictator".
"Our household have known for a long time that there are consequences to challenging the former president," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against the former director emerged after the former president shared on digital channels demanding his attorney general, Ms Bondi, charge the former director and others.
