As any significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
