Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
